Perception, Action, and the Brain

5 important questions on Perception, Action, and the Brain

How did Marr divide the explanatory task in three?

1. General analysis of the task is being performed (localizing a prey via sonar, doing addition, identifying 3D objects via 2D input) -> input - output function. What subtasks need to be carried out to solve the problem?
2. A scheme for representing the inputs and outputs & a sequence of mechanical steps that would carry out the task
3. How do we build a device capable of running through the steps?

(1. Task 2. Algorithm 3. Implementation)

Why was Marr's framework too neat?

In the real world, the distinctions among taks, algorithm and implementation aren't crystal clear

Omdat cognitieve functies en hun fysieke realisatie door co-evolutie vaak onlosmakelijk versmolten zijn.

What was right about Marr's framework?

Merely understanding the physiology wasn't enough

What is perceptual adaption?

Subjects can learn how to coordinate vision and action while wearing lenses that invert the entire visual scene so that the world appears upside down. After a couple of days, the world flips over, aspects now appear in the normal upright position. Remove the lenses and the scene is again inverted until readaptation occurs.

-> perception and action form a deeply interanimated unity

Wat bedoelt Brooks met de term 'intelligence without representation'?

Dat complex gedrag kan ontstaan uit simpele sensomotorische koppelingen zonder interne symbolische modellen.
